I hate the Dress Code :)
The dress code, while necessary, is ridiculous. The fact that girls can't wear shorts or tank tops or anything showing tummy at all is the dumbest thing i've ever heard. Not only that, but it's only reinforced in the bio sex female population for the most part. The dress code is harmful and teaches kids to be ashamed of their bodies and natural things like shoulders for god's sake."I think it really messes with how you feel about yourself because you are treated as something shameful and bad." says Skel Gracie, a McCallum freshman. Teachers and administrators use the dumbest excuses, too. They tell girls that they're distracting the male teachers and kids in the class, which is so disgusting I don't even know how to respond. If a teacher is getting aroused looking at a 14 year old girl in shorts and a tank top, then he is a danger to students. It's not the kids fault that the teacher is nasty. The same goes for piercings. At McCallum, the rules for that are a lot more lenient and you can pierce what ever you want and do what ever you want to your body, but it's not like that for a lot of other schools. Some schools only allow ear piercings and nose studs, and sometimes the ear piercings are only for girls which makes no sense. Some schools also don't allow for unnatural hair colors or really any expression of any kind. The dress code is meant to hinder self expression and body confidence and positivity and I won't stand for it.
You have the makings of a great column here but I think you kind of just oozed this out to get something on the page. A little revision and organization might serve the story better. 88
