Vocabulary


Principals of design:
1. Dominance: visual entry point for the page
2. Contrast: the use of opposites in size, shape, weight, and color or tone
3. Balance: Pages that are balanced can be folded in half vertically, each half mirroring the other
4. Unity: using consistent internal and external margins
Teaser: eye catching graphic element
Flag: Name of newspaper on page one
Folio: Type at the top of an inside page giving newspapers name, date, and page #
Byline: The reporters name
Jumps: To continue a story on another page
Story Divider: Lines between stories to separate them
Screens: Pattern of gray dots to create gray ares
Infographics: Slag for any informational graphic; any map
Masthead/Staff box: Block of info
Bastard Measure: Any non standard width for a column of text
Raw Wrap: Text that extends into a column alongside its headline
Reefer: Line or paragraph, often given graphic treatment
Wild Art: Photo that doesn't accompany any story
Pull Quote: Another name for liftout quote
Ears: Text or graphic elements on either side of a newspapers flag
Banner: Wild headline extending across the entire page
Kicker Headline: Small, short, one-line headline, often underscored, placed above larger headline
Tripod Headline: Headline that uses a big bold word or phrase and 2 smaller line of deck squaring off alongside
Hammer Headline: Headline that uses a big bold word or phrase for impact and runs a small wide deck below
Modular Design: Design system that views a page as a stack of rectangles
Text Wrap: Text that wraps around image
L-Shaped Text Flow: L-shaped article with an image in the L's blank space
U-Shaped Text Flow: U-shaped article with an image in the U's blank space
